Photoshoot Blackrose Barbershop in Tsim Sha Tsui
My ongoing photoshoots will be about revisiting some established barbers but in a new location. I managed to secure a photo shoot on site at the Blackrose Barbershop in TST in Hong Kong. The Blackrose Barbershop was founded by Don (Ma Yik Chi) previously the owner of the Thug Barbershop in Kwun Tong.
I arranged an interview and photo shoot in the early evening, before closing time. Before I went to see Don inside the barbershop I took some external shots and assessed the lighting and what was actually outside the shop. The barbershop is in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui on Chatham Road, which is one of the most important and bustling districts of Hong Kong. This barbershop is next to a residential building, this barbershop used to be a bar and food place called Tonys Bar. Outside the Blackrose Barbershop was a parked Motor Bike which belonged to Don, so I thought it would be good to take a photo with his bike later. During the photoshoot Don asked me to take a photo of them using an old Polaroid instant camera, I also shared some Fuji instant photos with them. Before the interview, I spoke to one of the co-partners in this business Garry (Chueng Leung Kee) where the men’s grooming shop is inside the Blackrose Barbershop and also located in other main shops in Hong Kong.
It was Garry who allowed me to set up my exhibition at the Chueng Leung Kee men’s grooming shop in Kwun Tong in 2017. This seems the perfect business idea to have a shop that sells men’s grooming products at the barbershop. It’s clear the men’s grooming industry is strong in Hong Kong if business collaboration is strong.
Don (Ma Yik Chi) is working now with 3 other barbers in the shop, it was interesting he told me that the 2 barbers Kieth and Billy were in fact, previous customers at is then one-man band barbershop in Kwun Tong in 2017.
