Part of the theme of the exhibition was that most of these photos were of people in their real environment as opposed to staged studio work that’s typical of today’s photo shoots. As I looked around the Exhibition, some work stood out to me, such as the photograph below on a featured poster by Ken Russel, in your dreams. 1955. “Taken from the series ‘The Last of the Teddy Girls’, 14-year-old Jean Rayner in the exploratory stage of Teddy-ism. Behind Jean, to the left, is Ted Burton”.(Russell, 2017)

There was very much a sense of style in the image, and it captured the essence of the lifestyle and fashions of the day, but in a realistic setting with no props or special effects. This also was a very empowering image for women of the time, as was the iconic images of other women through the ages of fashion and music. This got me thinking about my work and perhaps my images of the lifestyles of Hong Kong barbers was an indication of the type of work I could produce commercially in the future.

I also was impressed by the picture taken by Brian Griffin below which was from the book named ” Brian Griffin Copyright 1978″.(Griffin, 2017) This book concept and idea came up while he was with his main collaborator Barney Bubbles the famous Graphic designer, who published works such as Reasons to be cheerful and was a big influence in the music industry of the 80’s Album covers with artists such as Elvis Costello. This picture captured the essence of the Yachtsman being almost toasted by the Cup, but the expression was almost like he was saying”do we have to do this?”

I also thought the image below by Shirley Baker (LEVY, 2017) capturing these 3 boys reminded me of some of the people I saw around me when I grew up as a boy in the mid 70’s those mixed patterned jumpers and the famous snake belts that kids commonly worn back in the 70’s. Shirley Barker is well known for her spirited spontaneous street photography (Baker, 2017)

Another picture I took of Unseen work by Photographer Shirley Baker at the Here We Are Exhibition in Central, Hong Kong 2017

This image below by Jone Bown (Dodd, 2017) was interesting as these three people stood on this raised deck with all the footwear on display, this type of picture could work well in a shoe department store without any reference to today’s styles almost as a reference to how things have changed so much in fashion.
